#1: Head To The San Diego Botanic Gardens in Encinitas
With sunshine year-round and many native plants to explore, Kelly is all about finding fun environments where her daughter can play—and learn—outdoors. She tries to make a trip to the San Diego Botanic Gardens at least once a month, where she and her husband can adventure through the picturesque scenery, soak up the sun and chat with other families while their daughter digs in the sand, plays in the stream, and learns more about nature with every visit.
Whether it’s checking out the birds and butterflies, exploring the different plants in the alphabet garden or playing musical instruments made of stone, Kelly knows her daughter will have a blast. Head to the gardens mid-week, and you will find Story Time on Tuesdays and crafts and planting on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
#2: Split A Piece Of Pie At Betty’s Pie Whole Saloon in Encinitas
Conveniently located just down the street from the San Diego Botanic Gardens, Betty’s Pie Whole Saloonis the next stop on Kelly’s list. All that exploring at the gardens, and the family can really work up an appetite.
Betty’s uses only the purest and most natural ingredients, so Kelly can rest assured knowing her family is getting the best. Don’t miss Kelly’s favorite pie variety: Betty’s Berry Crumble Pie. The best part? The whole family can split just one piece.
#3: Happy Hour at Rimel’s Rotisserie in Cardiff
For a favorite Friday outing in Cardiff, Kelly likes to think of Rimel’s Rotisserie, or just “Rimel’s” for short, as the local watering hole. As the weekend approaches, she likes to round up the family and join a group of other couples for an appetizer or a drink on the patio overlooking the grassy area where the kids can play within view.
From owner Matt Rimel’s original menu created 20 years ago and still going strong today, Kelly’s top Rimel’s recommendations include the Chicken and Vegetable Potstickers, Fresh Catch Sliders, and the famous Wok-Seared Bowls.
#4: Playing In The Sand At Moonlight Beach in Encinitas
Kelly’s daughter loves to build sandcastles at “Moonlight”—the family’s favorite Encinitas beach. The beach has a family-friendly park just steps from the water, a convenience not all other North County beaches offer.
Need a break from the sun? Moonlight Beach is within walking distance of several local craft coffee shops in North County including Better Buzz, Lofty Coffee, and more. Whether you’re craving an iced latte, or a bite of fro yo, Moonlight Beach is perfect for a sun-filled afternoon followed by a snack on the way home.
#5: A Healthy Sunday Brunch From Naked Cafe in Solana Beach
After church on Sundays, Kelly likes to bring the family to Naked Cafe for brunch. She’s on a first-name basis with Naked Cafe’s friendly staff, and loves that the menu here is chock full of healthy dishes that are as affordable as they are delicious.
Kelly’s picks from the menu? Her husband’s go-to is the Rising Sun Quesadilla, while she usually opts for the Artichoke Scramble. Sienna, Kelly’s daughter, enjoys the Kid’s Multigrain Blueberry Pancakes.
