It is no secret that North County San Diego is the perfect locale for an active lifestyle. With almost year-round sun, beautiful sandy beaches and miles of trails, it is as if the environment was created for San Diegans to get moving and stay fit. For the days that aren’t so sunny in North County, you won’t walk more than a few blocks without seeing a yoga studio or state-of-the-art gym.
Let North County San Diego Be Your Playground
Luxury Realtor Kelli Miller is an Encinitas native, and makes sure to take full advantage of all the fitness options available in North County. The life of a real estate agent can be stressful. With multiple deals to close and many clients to please, Kelli leans toward exercise as a release. This week, she’s divulging her favorite workout spots, both indoors and out.
1. Go For A Run On The 101
This is my go-to workout activity. North County San Diegans live in such a beautiful place; there is no excuse not to get outside and run by the beach. I usually start and end at Fletcher Cove, with Swami’s Beach as my turnaround point.
Running this stretch of the 101 is my favorite way to de-stress. If you’re interested in more of a challenge, try running up and down each set of stairs through Cardiff!
2. Forget The Stairmaster: Head To Stone Steps Beach in Leucadia
Sprinting the stairs at Stone Steps Beach is a great way to work different muscle groups. I often tackle this workout with friends, and we bring free weights to work out our upper bodies simultaneously. Want to make this workout even tougher? Add push ups and wall sits when you reach the bottom of the stairs, and alternate between air squats, planks, and tricep dips at the top! It is a hard workout, but you cannot beat the view.
3. Stretch Away The Stress At Yoga Six In Solana Beach
I love going to Yoga Six to stretch and unwind after a long day. While cardio is my favorite form of exercise, adding yoga to my weekly routine helps to keep me centered and balanced. Yoga is also an excellent way to prevent exercise-induced injuries. Yoga Six is my favorite studio in North County. For instructors, Melody Wilkinson is one of the best. Namaste.
4. Shake It at The Movement Lab in Solana Beach
Cardio hip hop is one of the best workouts in North County San Diego! Instructor Ashley Erickson makes the classes fun, regardless of your level of experience. In one hour, you will learn a choreographed dance to one of your favorite songs. Catch one of Ashley’s classes on Sundays and Wednesdays.
5. Spin Class At Equinox in La Costa
The new Equinox in La Costa offers the best cardio workout in just 50 minutes. My favorite instructors, Ashley Erickson and Dana Simonelli, come prepared with the best playlists. This spin class really is a party on a bike. After the workout, I love going into the steam room to unwind. The best part? I have access to guest passes for P.S. Platinum clients who are interested in checking out the gym! If you’d like to check out Equinox La Costa, drop your contact information into the form at the bottom of this post.
6. Work Toward Washboard Abs at Core40 in Solana Beach
The classes at Core40 are the best way to work the small muscles in your abdomen. The movements don’t look like much, but you’ll be shaking uncontrollably trying to move an inch.
In just 40 minutes, you will tighten and tone your entire body. It hurts so good.
7. Hit The San Elijo Trails Running
The San Elijo Running Trails are the best kept secret in Solana Beach. Access the trail from North Rios Avenue and feel free to follow it all the way to Manchester in Encinitas. For a more difficult workout, run the hill just east of the I-5 Freeway at Lomas Santa Fe. Running on the trails can be a nice change of pace if you’re used to running on the beach.
8. Get Fit At Fit Athletic Club In Solana Beach
Locals are thrilled that this gym has been remodeled, and is now equipped with new machines and weights. My favorite class offered at Fit is Spin Class with Brandy Gossett and Anthony Valentino. Be sure to get there early to reserve a spot as they are almost always completely full! I love the free weights, and new turf area of the gym for resistance training. When I’m in the mood to mix it up, I'll do a tabata style workout with friends using the TRX straps, sled, kettle bells and box jumps.
9. Get Your Jog On In Del Mar
Start on the coast, run along the river mouth of the San Dieguito River over to Jimmy Durante Boulevard. Then, cross the street, head down San Dieguito Road and onto the trail that runs through Crest Canyon Park. This is a challenging uphill run that will eventually lead you to Del Mar Heights Road. From here, loop around and head back. Haven’t had enough? Continue to Mar Scenic Drive, and take the trail that winds through the Torrey Pines Reserve. I've seen a few snakes on the path, so keep your eyes open!
